UPDATE....Teams may place their DOD folders in week 15 by Friday- label with last names please!
I spoke to Wendy yesterday and she is very curious and expecting you all to share the research portion of your presentation.  Please show what you have done and prove that these decisions have not been made arbitrarily This is going to be an expensive project overall and she needs to see what thought ha gone into all of this.
Thanks all!

DoD Project continues into week 2!
Ok... last Friday you presented, and then you cast your votes on the top 3 ideas.
Here are the most popular choices (in no particular order)
1. Caeli's Papercraft
2. Eli's Sticker
3. Caleb's Keychain
4. Matt's mini booklet
5. Dakota's rackcard
Congratulations!  That means the names listed above are the Project Managers.
There will be two people per team and I have divided you up in the following way:

Team 1:
Caeli
Frank

Team 2:
Caleb
Josh

Team 3:
Eli
Kat

Team 4:
Dakota
Caleb C.

Team 5:
Matt
Lucas

OK, where do we start?
All of the projects have the same goal in mind.  Attract the attention of potential students and get them motivated to want to pursue more information about the DoD program.
Target Audience: 18-20 year old students
Demographic: students living in the Gainesville area
Internship/program will start this summer.

While your ideas are pretty well-developed more research and development is still needed. This is a new to all of you so let's take it slow and make sure that all of the steps are done with care.
First things first- RESEARCH- find out everything there is to know about what a job such as building inspector and plans inspector looks like.  How long are the days? What is the schedule like?  What does a day in the life of professions look like?

Get the facts:
How much do they make?
What schooling will they need?
Wht certifications does each job require?  Think about you owuld want to know before embarking on an adventure such as this.

Think about...
Communicating in a way that would appeal to you.  Maybe its the use of...
Icons
Infographs
Graphics
Something interactive

Show her (Mrs. Thomas) the money!
How much will you project cost to print/make?
How long will it take to arrive here?
Remember the budget of $800.

Start making a prototype- We will need this ready by Monday when I arrive back so I can get it printed and you can assemble it by Tuesday at the end of the day.

That;s it for now until I speak with Mrs. Thomas.  Email me with your thoughts, concerns, etc.
Congrats on getting this far.  While I am thousands of miles away, I trust that you I will be using your time wisely.  If your group gets too overwhelmed or melts down, work on Gmetrix so that we can get you guys tested on the Friday I return.
Check the website  for updates as I gather more information from Mrs. Thomas.
Thanks!!!

Tuesday:
Please continue to work on groups on ideas mentioned above.  Team leaders, please email me with questions, comments, and concerns.  Again, if all else fails or you hot a wall, go on Gmetrix and study for the ACA.  Make sure that both of you are doing this as it would not be fair for just one of you to be working on the DoD project alone.

Continue working on your vs. Poster employing the W.E.T. method of composition.
Here's a review from yesterday:

To help with formatting, it is useful to think in terms of columns. Columns help to keep text and images arranged neatly and also make your design more readable. I suggest limiting yourself to two rows of columns. This will keep you from getting overwhelmed or having to worry about clutter.Next, you want to position your visual, which will probably be some sort of image that reflects your topic. For a works-every-time layout, you want to position your visual at the top of your layout design. This will become the entry point in your layout for the viewer’s eye. Let’s see what this looks like so far.
<----------------------------------------------------
Next you want to think about your headline. Because people look at your image and headline before deciding whether or not to read the full layout, you want your headline to make a statement! You want to make sure it has visual weight, which means it should be larger than 11 point in size. Keep in mind that you only get to use 2 fonts in a works-every-time layout – one for the headline and one for the body text. You want to try and get your headline all onto one line (no widows or orphans, please). If you cannot get the headline into one line, let the copy/grid show you were to break the line. Best places to break long headlines are end of thoughts or phrases. Then you will need to include copy, which is the body of the text. You know… the stuff people are going to read.
<--------------------------------------------------------------
  • Keep your headline and lead together. The lead is the first paragraph of your text. Also, don’t indent the lead under the headline.
  • Keep your copy (the text) in columns to help manage readability and clutter. You want your columns to be between 2 and 10 inches long. No more, no less. When it comes to width, keep your columns between 6 to 12 words.
  • Along those lines, keep your paragraphs short and to the point, and use fonts that are easy to read. That means no script!
Once you have all that neat, tidy, and readable, it is time to move on to tags. A tag is an advertising term that refers to the information that is usually found at the bottom of an advertisement. You may or may not want to use a tag in your good design. The best place for a tag is in the lower right corner, since it follows the Western pattern of reading from left to right. Again, remember that you can only use 1 of your 2 fonts. Play around with your fonts until you get one that works well with your design. Experiment and have fun!
Now you know how to put together a Works-Every-Time Layout! Let’s see what the finished product looks like!

Tuesday, 2/13:

Lets talk about the WET layout and let's use it for the vs. Poster!
Agenda:
Start doing research on the WET method.

Monday, 2/12:

Time to start making some fun posters as we learn design layout!  Please click here to learn about the W.E.T. (Works every time) Layout Concept.  Once you look at this page, start drafting a layout idea for a "VS. poster" of your own design.
No, this is not a plug for violence, it is a way to make you think about how you could put your own twist on a traditional or classic design.  Think of creative and entertaining "battles" between your favorite characters, concepts, friends, elements, etc. - Due Wednesday, Critique- Thursday
Remember, the idea is to get people jazzed up enough to want to witness this face off between two people/subject/elements. etc.  Keep it fun.  Think about what would pull someone in long enough to read your entire poster.

Assigned: Appropriate Door Hanger
Directions:

We all need alone time or know someone who could use it desperately. Whether it is a class who is tired of interruptions or a  book worm who just wants to get through the next chapter of their book undisturbed.  Your challenge is to design a door hanger for someone in order to assure privacy but also explain exactly what they are doing.  Make this a double sided piece- one friendly side one that tells it like it is.
Ex- "Do not disturb, I'm painting" other side " The masterpiece is complete, come see the awesomeness."
Think about:
  • Color
  • Type
  • Visual Hierarchy
  • Illustrations
  • Quirky yet appropriate copy

Packaging of the world

Agenda:
Things to consider:
Successful packaging has these elements considered:
  •  Containment
  •  Security
  •  Protection
  •  Convenience
  •  Information
  •  Marketing- who is your target audience? what colors do they like, what colors go along with your industry?
Monday, 5/15:
Br:
Intro to new project: Package Design!
Specs:For our final project, we’ll be expanding our designs into three dimensions, creating packaging for a product. You will need to think about the client, typography, color, and form as well as materials, construction, durability, and how the finished work will be seen in its final context on a store shelf. Your packaging can be for any product.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Be both a functional packaging (capable of holding your item) and aesthetically considered design.
  • Be physically constructed – you have to make it for real! You can fake materials if necessary, but effort should be made to use real materials whenever possible.
COMPLETED ASSIGNMENT CHECKLIST
Physical materials to be turned in:
  • The packaging itself.
  • Your printed design brief.
A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER
  • Packaging should do six things (via “Package Design Workbook”): containment, security, protection, convenience, information, and marketing. Be sure to consider each of these when looking at existing packaging and designing your own.
  • Is the packaging evolutionary (small, incremental changes to existing packaging formats) or revolutionary (a totally new approach for the product)?
Agenda:
Research package design and decide from the following list, what type of product you will design a package for:
 Soap  (Floral, Spicy, Unscented)
Juice
(Orange, Carrot, Vegetable)
Tea
(Peppermint, Green Sencha, Earl Grey)
Candy
(Licorice, Mints, Gummy Bears)
Aspirin
(Regular-Strength Caplets, Tablets, or Maximum Strength GelCaps)
Ice Cream
(Rocky Road, Strawberry, Vanilla)
Perfume, Cologne, or Essential Oil
(Vetiver, Bergamot, Lavender)
Office Products
(Staples, Paper Clips, Rubber Bands)

If you would like to include your cell phone number as well as your office number then it is perfectly acceptable.  OF course, don't forget to include your LOGO!

Intro to Project #2 Corporate Identity
A Corporate Identity is a ...
Combination of color schemes, designs, words, etc., that a firm employs to make a visual statement about itself and to communicate its business philosophy. It is an enduring symbol of how a firm views itself, how it wishes to be viewed by others, and how others recognize and remember it. Unlike corporate image (which is 'in there' changeable mental impression), corporate identity is 'out there' sensory-experience conveyed by things such as buildings, décor, logo, name, slogan, stationery, uniforms, and is largely unaffected by its financial performance and ups and downs in its fortunes. Corporate-identity is either strong or weak (not positive, negative, or neutral like a corporate image) and is more or less permanent unless changed deliberately.

Week 7: February 27, 2017
Essential Question:
What is the WET layout?  Why does it work?
W.E.T. Layout Review- (Images to the left)

Monday:
BR: "VS" Poster in Review
Please keep working on your posters!

Since you should only be using one page to do this design, you need to make sure that you layout generous margins in your design. And by generous, I mean use at least half-inch margins all around the outside of your layout. The larger your layout, the bigger the margins you will need.
<------------------------------------------------
To help with formatting, it is useful to think in terms of columns.

- Due Thursday- Critique on Friday!
Remember, the idea is to get people jazzed up enough to want to witness this face off between two people/subject/elements. etc.  Keep it fun.  Think about what would pull someone in long enough to read your entire poster.
